The most recent version of the IEEE’s wireless local-area network (WLAN) standard, 802.11ac, uses the 5-GHz unlicensed band and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) to significantly boost data speeds while minimizing the interference inherent in the already crowded 2.4-GHz band.
